Capturing the relationship between conditionals and conditional probability with a trivalent semantics

چکیده
Intuitively, it seems that both sentences are of the form: it’s likely that x, where, in the first case, x = Georgia will join the E.U. and, in the second case, x = if Russia needs foreign aid, Georgia will join the E.U.. Understanding how these ∗I am grateful to Chris Barker, Paul Égré, Linda Rothschild, James Shaw, Robbie Williams, and Seth Yalcin for pointing out some errors and giving helpful comments on earlier drafts. Also thanks to Kai von Fintel and Robbie Williams for giving me some crucial references. Kratzer (1981, 1986) denies this syntactic parsing, claiming that the function of “if”-clauses is to restrict higher up modal quantifiers in the sentence, in the case of (1-b) the natural choice is the probability operator it’s likely that. While there is much to be said for her view, I think that, generally speaking, her strategy will not easily explain all the recalcitrant facts about probability and conditionals that the proposal presented below aims to. For example, many judge (i) to have the same truth conditions as (1-b):

Measure-Free Conditioning, Probability and Non-Monotonic Reasoning
Recent results in the foundations of probability theory indicate that a conditional probability can be viewed as a probability attached to a mathematical entity called a measure-free condit ional. Such a measure-free conditional can receive a semantics in terms of a trivalent logic and logical operations are defined on conditionals in terms of truth-tables. It is shown that these results can be...
متن کاملA Theory of Conditionals Based on Hierarchies of Situations
We present an approach to the semantics of subjunctive conditionals based on the situation semantics notion of a constraint, in which the connection between antecedent A and consequent B of a conditional ‘if A were the case, B would be’ is an informational relation between types of situations. We also argue that the information contained in a hierarchy of planning schemas as commonly used in Ar...
متن کاملIn Defense of a Contextualized Suppositional Account of Conditional Credence
Conditional credence is an important concept in many areas of philosophy. However, little consensus has been achieved regarding to its semantics and ontology. In this thesis I shall sketch a contextualist suppositional account of conditional credence by drawing insights from two seemingly disjoint debates: the foundational debate on the relationship between conditional and unconditional probabi...
متن کاملTowards an algebraic framework for many-valued conditional probability
We investigate probability functions defined over many valued conditional events. During the last decade or so considerable research effort has been directed towards the understanding of what (subjective) conditional probability might look like in the context of many-valued logics. Given its centrality in the area, a particularly well-studied case is that of Lukasiewicz’s infinite-valued logic ...
متن کاملAn Information-Based Theory of Conditionals
We present an approach to combining three areas of research which we claim are all based on information theory: knowledge representation in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science using prototypes, plans, or schemata; formal semantics in natural language, especially the semantics of the ‘if-then’ conditional construct; and the logic of subjunctive conditionals first developed using a poss...
